Module 3: Financing Your Education

A college education is a big investment! Many military spouses use a combination of scholarships and loans to fund their education. Here are some potential funding sources of interest:

  • myCAA scholarship: Provides $4,000 worth of funding for academic/training programs that help spouses of active-duty members at certain ranks ( pay grades E-1 to E-5, W-1 to W-2 and O-1 to O-2) pursue careers deemed “portable”
  • GI Bill: Your spouse may have GI Bill benefits that they could choose to transfer to you. This provides 36 months of education benefits, including book and housing stipends.
  • In-state tuition: Many institutions will provide in-state tuition to military spouses so be sure to look into these policies with specific programs
  • SECO scholarship search tool
Even with all of these programs, you may still need to borrow money in order to attend school. Be sure to complete the FASFA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to determine your eligibility for federal grants, scholarships, and loans.

Assignment: Complete FASFA. Then, determine any additional funding you may be be eligible to use and list those in the comments. Update your spreadsheet accordingly!
